Under the Weather Remedies

remedies

When you were younger and felt under the weather, your parents or caretakers probably took you to the doctor, gave you some medicine, and offered you some good old-fashioned chicken noodle soup to make you feel better. Now that you’re older, maybe you want some other alternatives for when you’re feeling sick or having stomach aches. I wanted to share some tried and true remedies that worked for me for various ailments I had over the years. There’s no scientific evidence that it works for everybody, but these happen to work for me, and I hope maybe they can work for you when you’re feeling a little blue!

For a stomach ache or stomach bug/virus:

  • ginger ale – the fizziness of the ginger ale always managed to settle my stomach when I had vicious cramps from stomach aches, or when I just couldn’t keep down any food from having a stomach bug; it’s light in flavor so it won’t upset your stomach even more
  • slightly burnt toast – my mom told me once that the burnt part of toast is great for settling your stomach; I don’t know how or why, but when I couldn’t eat anything when I had the stomach flu, I was able to eat burnt toast and I felt better within a couple of hours!
  • Gatorade (or any drink with electrolytes) – if you don’t have an appetite or are dehydrated, these drinks are really great for replenishing the needed electrolytes your body is looking for

Note: these are also good if you partied a little too hard and need something to get you back on your feet and feeling like yourself again!

For a fever:

  • heat – it seems counterintuitive, but the best way to break a fever is by sweating it out; wear a bunch of layers, take a hot shower, bundle up in blankets when you sleep, and you’ll be sweaty, but once the fever breaks, you’ve made it through the storm
  • OTC fever reducer – acetaminophen and ibuprofen are really great for helping to reduce your temperature, and I would recommend you take a pill along with keeping yourself warm to break a fever

For a cold:

  • chicken noodle soup (or any soup!)
  • honey lemon tea – honey has so many health and healing properties, and it’s great for getting over a cold; lemons have antibacterial properties as well, and can help combat the common cold (honey lemon tea is awesome for sore throats as well, since the honey is very soothing for your throat after you’ve coughed all day)

Asians are always one step ahead with their food products! These jars contain honey citron tea, and all you have to do is take a spoon and put it in a cup of hot water. This is really great for colds as well, or even just to warm you up on a cold day 🙂

For a headache/migraine:

  • peppermint oil – I’ve read that peppermint is really great because of the menthol it contains. The cooling sensation is great for rubbing onto the temples, or even your jaw or the back of your neck when you have a bad headache or migraine
