Earth Day: Take Action for a Better Future

How many of you know that Earth Day started over 40 years ago? What started out as an environmental movement in the US turned into a worldwide effort to preserve our planet. This day gave a voice to environmental concerns plaguing our country, and now has become one of the largest movements for people around the world to take action to take care of our planet in any way they can (i.e. sustainably taking care of trash, planting trees, cleaning up coral reefs, and advocating for environmental change).

A record-breaking 165 countries gathered in NYC yesterday and today at the United Nations to sign a climate change agreement (aka the Paris Agreement) and agree to cut emissions and limiting warming to only 1.5 or 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. For more information, check out this link.

We only have one planet (for now, for those who believe we may be able to live on another planet in the distant future haha) and we should be taking better care of it!

What can you do?

  • sign a petition calling for global climate action
  • reduce your carbon and ecological footprint
  • eat less meat (Why? Because farm animals, especially cows, produce insane amounts–20% for a better picture– of methane gas that is in the environment!)
  • buy local produce
  • go paperless with your mail!
  • use recyclable plastic (or use glass or metal containers and avoid buying plastic products altogether)
  • start composting
  • recycle your electronics i.e. batteries and cell phones
  • spread the word!
