Sunscreens: What’s Your Pick?

Beautiful beach and sea

Hey everyone! Summer is in full swing with the warm rays shining on all of us here in NYC 🙂 I wanted to get your advice on your suncreen of choice. Over the years, I’ve tried so many different brands (Coppertone, Banana Boat, Aveeno, Australian Gold, Neutrogena, etc.) and I’d love to get your two cents on what you would recommend.

My skin type: combination (can be normal at times, while other times there will be dry patches, and my T-zone is usually oily), with eczema sometimes on my arms and legs when the weather changes.

Most sunscreens come in bottles or sprays, and I wanted to eventually move away from plastic bottles, but in the meantime, I’m open to trying brands that have limited packaging options if they are good for your body and health. There have been ads for “The Honest Company” products, but after hearing and reading about reviews of the bad side effects of using these products, I’m hesitant to try anything new without people’s firsthand experiences and feedback.

Additionally, do any of you have recommendations on deodorants? I’m definitely open to trying mainly deodorants without the antiperspirant chemicals, and saw Piperwai on Shark Tank, but saw some iffy reviews on Amazon… If there’s a Piperwai staff reading this, I would be open to testing your product out and writing a review ^_^ I was planning to visit Lush to try one of their natural deodorants, so if there’s anyone out there who has used charcoal-based deodorants or natural/organic products, I want to hear from you! 🙂

Both my sons are very fair skinned, so I usually get them a high spf, ( they’re 21 and 16 so I sometimes struggle to make them wear it!) Tropicana I think it is…not much call for it at the moment as it’s just endlessly raining here! Would be interested to hear more about natural products too…

    1. Thanks for sharing what you use at home! I read somewhere that after SPF 50, the higher numbers don’t really make an impact, but I’ve yet to read about evidence proving that.

I hope others comment on this post with their recommendations also so we’re both better informed 🙂

Well, there is no sunscreen that can absorb 100% of UV B, and SPF 50 blocks about 98% of it…
I studied chemistry and as apart of laboratory exercise we measured UV absorption of some commercial sunscreens, it turned out that this information is actually very close to truth. It is still not an “official” proof, but it is something.
        🙂

      2. Oooh that’s good to know!!😁 I guess it’s safe to say that spf50 is the key number to get when it comes to sunscreen 😉 thanks for sharing, I wish we had that experiment when I studied Chem in school! If I may ask, which country are you located in (since the US curricula may be different than your country’s)?

Yes, I agree, SPF50 is the one. 🙂
I come from Croatia, so it might be much different than in US, you are right. However, I think even Croatian students don’t have that experiment in schools, I’ve seen it for the first time at the University. Anyway, it is simple and interesting experiment, and it really tells you something about these products.

Yes, I feel it’s a subject well worth knowing more about, my younger son is quite knowledgeable about herbal/aromatherapy things, like the power of tea tree oil but there are so many unnecessary chemicals in various products it is concerning. Thanks for the informative post…will there be a follow up?

    1. I’ll wait a bit to see if anyone posts their comments about different sunscreens, if not I’ll just go about my usual routine–I’m currently using Neutrogena for my face, and sometimes using Australian Gold and Banana Boat for the rest of my body when I wear sleeveless shirts!

As for the deodorants, I hope to purchase something natural-ingredient based so I can test it out and then I can post a review 🙂

Well, I’ll be interested to see what people say ..apparently apple cider vinegar can be used as a deoderant (presumably mixed with essential oil). Hmm, can’t say I fancy it myself!

    1. Whaaat?! That’s interesting, I’ve never heard of that! I’ve tested essential oils diluted with almond oil but didn’t find it very effective, so onto the next experiment haha 🙂
