30 years have passed and as a country we have done nothing to mitigate the effects of human activity on the environment. Climate change is real. #ThisIsZeroHour and we need to take steps to reduce our impact on the environment. This includes pushing our elected officials to:
-
stop taking money from fossil fuel lobbyists
-
stop fracking and tar sands development
-
divest from fossil fuel and new oil and gas pipelines
-
implement carbon taxes on our biggest polluters
-
put climate change back on the agenda and commit to keeping the increase in global average temperature to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels
-
move towards renewable energy
-
pass legislation to ban single-use plastics and enforce recycling
We won’t have a future for our future generations at the rate we’re going. We will say goodbye to destination islands, our coastal cities (Florida will be first to go, followed by other cities at low sea levels), our land and ocean animals and ecosystems around the world will fall victim to humans’ activities and lose their homes and their food… They won’t have a quality of life because so much of our planet will be lost to the effects of climate change and global warming.
I know some of my friends don’t care, but it’s time to start. Y’all want children or your family/friends have or plan to have children, and they will suffer economically. We each have our parts to play. Measure your carbon footprint now and see what steps you can take to reduce that and take better care of the planet.
